eBay Gives Sellers One Day’s Notice Before USPS Rates Rise Again
eBay is warning sellers that USPS rates available through eBay Labels will increase again September 19, announcing the changes just one day before they take effect.

The United States Postal Service is making rate adjustments for select Ground Advantage and Priority Mail shipments effective September 19, 2026. These changes do not apply to rural ZIP Codes.
Ground Advantage
- Rates will increase by $0.10 for packages 0-2lbs for Zones 1-8
- Rates will increase from $0.27 - $2.28 for packages 3-5lbs for Zones 1-8
Priority Mail
- Rates will increase from $0.73 - $4.35 for packages weighing up to 10lbs shipping to Zone 8
- Flat rate package rates will increase by $0.30 for zones 1-8
The eBay shipping calculator will automatically update with the new rates when they take effect on September 19, 2026.
Note: these changes do not apply to "rural" ZIP codes which have had their own separate USPS rate structure since 2024.
eBay sellers have been playing whack-a-mole with USPS rates since a surprise rate drop in June provided steep discounts on many Ground Advantage shipments in the 3-5 lb range.
That update was followed by changes to oz-based tier pricing for Ground Advantage, the regular annual USPS rate update in July, and multiple updates affecting certain package weights and zones throughout August.
And another change is already on the calendar. USPS temporary peak-season pricing is scheduled to take effect October 4 and runs through January 17, meaning many package rates are set to change again just over two weeks after the September 19 adjustment.

As shipping costs continue to rise, eBay has also been "nudging" sellers to pass discounted label rates on to buyers, arguing lower shipping charges can help listings stay competitive and drive more sales.

eBay and other third-party label providers may have Negotiated Service Agreements or Non-Published-Rate product contracts with USPS that set rates separately from published retail and commercial pricing, so similar adjustments may also appear on other shipping platforms.
As always, sellers on marketplaces like Etsy and eBay will be particularly impacted by any rate increase since many selling and advertising fees are also charged on shipping costs, resulting in a de facto fee increase that eats even further into margins. For eBay, higher buyer-facing shipping charges can also lift reported Gross Merchandise Volume since shipping and taxes are included in the calculation, allowing GMV to rise without any corresponding increase in the value of merchandise sold.
eBay said shipping revenue grew double digits year over year in Q2 2026, and identified shipping, advertising and payments as positive contributors to take rate in its Q3 outlook.

Last month, the company hired longtime Walmart and Amazon supply chain executive Andres Gonzalez as VP and General Manager of Global Shipping and Authentication, with Gonzalez describing both businesses as "must-win priorities."

He arrives as eBay is steadily taking a larger role in the shipping transaction, particularly outside the US where a majority of UK C2C orders are now processed through managed shipping.
The company is testing a similar Managed Shipping model with select sellers in the US. For eligible listings, eBay determines the shipping rate shown to the buyer and uses those funds to provide the seller with a prepaid label, taking much of the pricing decision out of the seller's hands.
That increased responsibility also extends to what happens when packages are lost, damaged or delayed. A recent eBay job posting showed the company is looking for help shaping the long-term strategy and "protection economics" of Shipping Protections.
