UPDATE 2-27-26

Strauss Borrelli PLLC is now investigating whether eBay may have violated WARN Act 60 day notice requirement, seeking to potentially represent affected employees from the company's San Jose headquarters.

UPDATE 2-26-26

eBay has now confirmed this latest round of layoffs, saying they are being undertaken to align its workforce with strategic priorities.

"We are taking steps to reinvest across our business and align our structure with our strategic priorities, which will affect certain roles across our workforce,” the company in a statement to Bloomberg today. “We are grateful for the contributions of the employees impacted and are committed to supporting them with care and respect.”

Per public records requests filed by Value Added Resource, eBay's California WARN letter shows 271 total roles impacted across both San Jose and San Francisco locations, accounting for ~34% of total layoff with software engineers and developers and payments/finance roles seeing heaviest cuts.

2-25-26

eBay is reportedly undertaking a mass layoff today in move that could impact ~800 employees (about 6% of total workforce) as company continues to ship more positions overseas.

While an official announcement has yet to be made, reports are coming in across LinkedIn and Blind from affected employees in Oregon, Utah, Texas, California and beyond, suggesting the cuts may be deep and across multiple divisions of the company.

Analysts and industry observers will no doubt wonder if the layoffs are the result of eBay's increasing use of AI across various parts of the business, and that could be true in some areas like customer support.

But a post on TheLayoff indicates it may simply be the age old story of cutting mostly US-based roles and shipping those functions overseas.

Half my team including myself laid off..moving out roles to india and Ireland. I think by now those impacted are aware.

eBay announced plans to shutter their Research and Development operations in Israel last year, saying those jobs would instead be moved to a new R&D Hub in India.

eBay To Shutter Israel R&D Operations, Layoff 200+ Employees By 2026
eBay announces phased shutdown of Research and Development operations in Israel, with over 200 employees losing their jobs by Q1 2026.

While eBay had said those layoffs would occur "by Q1 2026," it appears most of the company's Israel operations wound down last year, not making up the bulk of the layoffs being reported today which appear to have a significant US impact.

The move comes as eBay also faces unknown legal expenses as lawsuit related to 2019 stalking scandal settled for undisclosed terms just days before trial was set to start.

eBay also just reported Q4 2025 earnings last week with a surprise announcement they are making a $1.2B play to buy Depop from Etsy - and while that acquisition is said to be an all cash deal, the timing alongside major cost cutting layoffs is sure to raise eyebrows.

eBay has not responded to request for comment as of time of publishing.

If you're an eBay employee who has been affected by today's layoffs, I'd love to chat - requests for confidentiality always honored and respected.
