Etsy Taps Sellers to Test AI Highlight Summaries, Raising Accuracy and Transparency Concerns
Etsy is developing a new feature that will use AI to summarize item listing details and looking to enlist sellers' to help test accuracy before launch - but if the initial experience is any indication, they still have a long way to go until it's ready for prime time.
Seller and ecommerce consultant Cindy Baldassi posted about the currently unreleased feature on LinkedIn, saying she and others are seeing a new pop up advising Etsy has created AI Highlights for some items with a link to review the summary and provide feedback about its accuracy.
The pop up says:
About AI highlights
We’ve created a short summary of your item’s features using AI, based on your listing to help it stand out to busy shoppers. We’re still working on this unreleased feature. Let us know if these summaries are accurate so we can keep improving.
But Baldassi says the items flagged as having an AI summary don't actually show anything when viewing the pop up, leaving sellers wondering what exactly Etsy is doing and most importantly - will sellers have a way to remove any inaccurate AI generated information and how will claims or bad ratings due to inaccurate AI details be handled?
I've written a short post (with screenshots) on the new "Review AI summary" link on some Etsy listings in the Listings manager. I have some thoughts on accuracy... www.linkedin.com/feed/update/... #EtsySellerNews

Those concerns are well founded, given the experience many sellers have had with Etsy using AI to fill in alt text for images or summarize product reviews or to "enhance" search and discovery for buyers.

Rival marketplace eBay has similarly been using AI to highlight product details and summarize descriptions, even going so far as to test altering images to show items displayed on AI generated models without the seller's knowledge or explicit consent - all of which have been met with backlash from sellers and similar concerns about increases in returns and bad feedback with little transparency or support when the AI gets things wrong.

Etsy says they are committed to keeping a "human-first, AI-enabled" approach for the platform, publishing their statement of AI Principles for Keeping Human Connection At The Center Of Innovation last year.
New CEO Kruti Patel Goyal has not been shy about telling both investors and sellers that the company's future will continue to include increasing integration with AI - she claims it will help sellers improve their businesses, but many say it's making things worse, not better.

While we wait for more details to emerge about how Etsy is going to implement AI Highlights, let us know in the comments below what you think about this new feature!
