Shopify says the issue has been resolved but some merchants would like more transparency about exactly what happened.
Thank you for your patience. The issue related to Google Tag Manager is now resolved and buyers should be able to reach checkouts as expected. If you continue to experience issues, please contact live support.

... with merchants on service outages so we can mitigate the problems this causes. The lack of RSS or alerts on https://t.co/3bBZyDZYCN is very poor and also the fact that not more than 1 hour after reporting the issue resolved it has now vanished from the incident site ...

Some Shopify merchants are reporting buyers are unable to complete checkout in their stores today due to an error that causes the checkout button to loop back to the cart.
Shopify says the issue may be affecting stores where Google Tag Manager is present.
What happened?
Storefronts that use Google Tag Manager may have issues directing customers from the cart page to checkout. We recommend temporarily disabling Google Tag Manager code as a workaround while our developers continue to investigate.Events

So far, the stores reporting this issue all have a reference to Google Tag Manager (googletagmanager.com) somewhere in the theme code. Temporarily disabling that part of the theme code (which may be in the admin checkout settings) solves the problem for now. Our developers are continuing to investigate.Aug 31, 2022 at 04:36 AM
We have received reports that some merchants without Google Tag Manager may also be affected. The workaround of temporarily disabling Google Tag Manager may still be effective. We will continue to update you as we investigate further.
Some stores are experiencing a loop where the checkout button loops back to the cart and people can’t checkout

It’s a glitch with Google tag manager or something pic.twitter.com/qXemx91MRp
Trekkie(Shopify's pixel script) triggers the Google Ads tag, and it starts with googletagmanager .com. It is not the GTM script.

The problem seems to be here because everything works as expected when we block this Trekkie script.

While Shopify continues to investigate, some helpful users are sharing workarounds they've tested to temporarily fix the issue by editing their theme files.
I can’t believe more people aren’t talking about the @shopify checkout issue. 12 hours and massive stores are still affected with no announcement from shopify

Here’s a fix, if your store is affected pic.twitter.com/rkvr72AlBP
The change is made on cart.liquid or main-cart.liquid depending on the theme.
