A surprise expansion of AI Magical Listing and new View Item Page image test are throwing eBay users for a loop, here's what buyers and sellers need to know.

CEO Jamie Iannone told investors on the Q2 2026 earnings call that the company's AI-powered "Magical Listing" experience would be rolling out to more new and reactivated sellers in the US, UK, Germany and Australia this month - but apparently eBay forgot to send the same message to sellers, leaving them confused when the listing format on the app suddenly changed this week.

Julie Shapiro, owner of CasaChic Consignment, posted about the update on Instagram, saying many of the sellers she's spoken to do not like the change.

Other sellers in her comments also did not find the experience "magical", with some saying the AI listing takes as long or longer than regular listing and doesn't provide accurate results.

For me it’s taking the same amount of time. I am not happy with the listing titles they choose and I’ve ended up deleting what AI writes and writing my own. It’s not the worse thing, but it’s not helpful. I would also like if there was an option to turn it off.

It’s horrible takes so much time I hate the rollout with no warning I like where I can take my photos save draft so back later cannot do that anymore photos last step it is very clunky and not streamlined at all there is no way this will ever be a time saver for me.

Those critiques echo the experience I had when testing the latest iteration of the tool earlier this year - while it was an improvement over the previous version, there was still far too much manual entry needed and the AI still struggles to accurately identify items from just a picture.

Magical Listing Revisited: Has eBay Finally Closed the AI Gap?
eBay launches next-gen AI Magical Listing. Has it finally closed the gap between hype and reality?

For now, the expansion appears to be mostly affecting casual sellers using personal accounts rather than businesses. It's also currently limited to the eBay app, so if you want to skip the AI listing feature completely, you should be able to use the regular listing form through the desktop web experience instead.

Users also noticed eBay is changing how images are displayed on item pages this week, and it could be bad news for those who use multi-variation listings. The new image layout appears for some accounts in some browsers, but not others, and also appears across the US, UK and other markets, indicating eBay is likely A/B testing before deciding on whether to make the changes permanent.

For those who are seeing the test, instead of the main image in the middle and a list of images to scroll through on the left, eBay displays the main image in the middle, 2 images underneath that and the buyer has to click the "Sell all (in this case 11) photos" button to see the rest.

If you click that button, it then opens a gallery page where you can scroll through all of the images.

Sellers in the eBay community were not pleased with how their images are being displayed, and some buyers aren't impressed either.

I just saw new listing photo layout ... ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE ... PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK!! | eBay Community Selling
Who in there right mind changed the listing photo layout and set it up this way???First, the original with only 1 main enlarged pic is totally fine, look at lit…

Who in there right mind changed the listing photo layout and set it up this way???

...This is ridiculous for me as a buyer and I can only imagine the buyers that will try to return items claiming they didn't see the defects or know there were additional pics because this new layout is not intuitive at all.

The change may be even worse for those who use multi-variation listings as the new display only shows a few of the options, which could make buyers think those are the only variations available if they don't view the full drop down list.

Please eBay, don’t push this new gallery on variant listings | eBay UK Business Seller Board
So today I’ve noticed this new horrible gallery my listings using Firefox and Safari:On Chrome it’s still showing the old gallery which is good, and I am hoping…

On Chrome it's still showing the old gallery which is good, and I am hoping the above is a test or mistake, but I am really concerned about this as all my listings are variant listings and it's not obvious to the customers that multiple prints are available under this new format.

Yeah, now when you land on a multi-variant listing it isn't clear at all to the buyer its' a multi-variant listing - before they would see the thumbnails and be able to navigate variants that way too. It NEEDS a thumbnail row somewhere to control the main image/variants - look at ANY shopify theme or site, it's basic UX best practices.

If you land directly on a variant there is NO GALLERY OR THUMBSTRIP at all! I built my store around this multi-variant setup, and now this backwards step has undone all my work on about 12,000 variants.

Sellers are encouraged to share their feedback on the changes directly with eBay by clicking the question mark in the lower right corner of the screen and choosing the option to send feedback.
