Meta is rolling out new AI-powered tools designed to make listing items on Facebook Marketplace faster and easier, promising sellers can simply upload photos and let Meta AI generate a draft listing complete with item details and suggested pricing.

With other marketplaces like Mercari, Poshmark, Depop and eBay already experimenting with similar technology — with mixed results — I put Meta’s new tools to the test using the same items I recently tried with the latest iteration of eBay’s “Magical Listing” feature.

Magical Listing Revisited: Has eBay Finally Closed the AI Gap?
eBay launches next-gen AI Magical Listing. Has it finally closed the gap between hype and reality?

I started with a sea turtle themed mouse pad, which eBay's AI had misidentified as a ceramic decorative plaque.

After uploading the image and tapping "create listing details" Meta AI correctly recognized the item as a sea turtle mouse pad with wrist rest, suggested a price of $10, a condition of "used", and filled in an accurate description.

Even more interesting, Meta AI provides 4 different options to adjust the tone of the generated description: Recommended, Friendly, Professional, and Concise.

eBay sellers have been asking for an option to adjust tone since the company launched their AI description generator in 2023 - but eBay has yet to oblige the request, putting Meta AI/Facebook Marketplace way ahead on this crucial functionality.

Meta has also included an "auto-reply with Meta-AI" feature, allowing sellers to set up automatic responses to common questions - like buyers asking if the item is still available.

For a second test, I again used an item I had previously used for testing eBay AI listing - a Starbucks mug.

Interestingly, Meta AI also recognized the mug was sitting on a coaster and accurately identified the coaster as depicting a beach scene.

It's impressive that Meta's image recognition picked up those details, but whether or not they would really be helpful would depend on if I actually intended to sell this as a mug and coaster set.

If not, I would need to either edit the title and description to remove those details or retake the photo without the coaster included - either way, that would not be the fault of the AI and is a good reminder for sellers to think carefully about photo composition when using these kinds of tools.

And just like the mouse pad, Meta AI offered tone options for the generated description for the mug as well.

In addition to listing creation help and automated message replies, Meta is also using AI to summarize your profile details, providing buyers with information like how long you’ve been on Facebook and your number of friends, as well as a brief summary of your Marketplace activity like your listing history, the types of items you sell, and your seller ratings.

More details here.

Final Thoughts

In my testing, Meta AI for Facebook Marketplace performed better than many of the various AI listing tools competing marketplaces have launched so far.

While some may still prefer to write their own descriptions and messages, these tools do a good job of recognizing what items actually are and filling in the blanks for those who don't want to do it manually.

But as always, sellers should review everything carefully before hitting publish as they will still ultimately be responsible for any errors the listing may contain.
