Depop Tests Automating Parcel Size Details For Shipping Calculations

Depop is currently testing changes to how parcel sizes are assigned when listing items, removing ability for sellers to manually select package sizing and automating the process based on item details instead.

A support rep described details of how the new automated system will work, saying if the label provided is too small, the seller can still drop off the parcel at USPS and pay the difference for a larger label then send Depop a photo of the receipt, including the extra amount paid, to be reimbursed for the difference.

Details of the test were shared by a seller on Reddit, who called the new policy asinine and complained about the inconvenience of having to wait in line at the post office to pay for any extra cost.

Y'all this makes me wanna pull my hair out. Not only are some of my buyers now overpaying for shipping labels that are heavier than needed, I also have a few packages that are heavier than the label weight and now Depop wants us to wait in line and upgrade them at the counter.

I know a lot of people will say "use pirate ship instead" but I've used Depop labels for years and have never had issues till now. And it's kinda too late to go back and change 100s of listings to my own shipping.

Really hope they quickly realize how asinine this new policy is.

Other sellers chimed in, also expressing negative reactions to the change.

NO! No way I'm paying out of pocket and waiting for Depop to reimburse me! I'm on disability and literally live hand to mouth. A small sale can mean buying a loaf of bread and milk for my kids. So a few bucks out of my pocket is detrimental to my family.

Most times I don't have the money to pay for an insufficient label!

Some pointed out that Depop forces newer accounts into using only Depop shipping, leaving those sellers with no options to work around this new requirement.

It’s ridiculous considering newer accounts are restricted to using only Depop shipping.

I never wait in line at the post office, or go to the post office period as most of my items fit in a polymailer that can be left in the 📬

And the original commenter posted an update saying their post office told them there is no option to "upgrade" a label and only pay the difference - leaving them unsure how to proceed.

Update: USPS said they can't upgrade or change the weight on a label after it's already been generated. I'm just sending these packages out as is. Depop is so incompetent man

The move comes after the company updated their Shipping terms earlier this year, using the threat of automatically cancelling orders to "encourage" sellers to ship items quickly.
