Is eBay Shipping More Than It Should Be After USPS Rate Hike? $4 Irregular Package Fee May Be To Blame

eBay sellers say shipping costs are higher than they should be after July 2025 USPS rate hike - and a new irregular packaging fee may be to blame.

Sellers have been reporting across social media and the eBay community forums that since new USPS rates went into effect July 13th, many shipments are showing the cost would be around $4 more if they buy the label through eBay compared to other label providers like Pirate Ship.

Ebay labels overcharging

Printed a label this morning using Ebay labels USPS Ground advantage, the package was 8oz. Normally it would be 4.69 to the zone it went to, but Ebay showed and charged me 8.74.

It's obvious there's a glitch in the system. I called and a broken English hard to understand rep answered. She said there was a price increase, yes, on 7/13/25, and it was less than 5% on commercial rates.

New prices at USPS through eBay

Hi, does anyone know about the new prices eBay applies to shipping as a seller? My average shipping cost was $4.50 in the US. This week I made other shipments and the price changed to $8.80, almost 100% more, I've tried to make adjustments to the USPS on eBay and everything is the same except for the price.

Are any other eBay sellers getting billed $8.60 for USPS ground packages 4 ounces or less ?

This is not due to postal rates increasing. The postal rate is $4.80 for ground packages 4 ounces and under ( which is still horrible). Please see the screen shots. Your system is showing $8.60 while stamps.com which uses the postal system is $4.80 which of course i used.

Something is not right about this as am sure if it is happening to me it is happening to many many others as well. Over half of ebay sellers would not be able to operate with prices like that.

That ~$4 difference is most likely due to the fact that eBay recently introduced support for USPS irregular/non-standard packaging fees - and sellers may not be aware those settings have been applied to their listings.

eBay Label Purchase & Listing Flows Updated To Support Irregular, Non-Standard Packages
eBay listing & shipping label purchasing flows now include irregular, non-standard package option to display accurate rates including surcharges.

Sellers who are experiencing this apparent rate discrepancy should check to make sure they do not have the irregular package option set both on the listing and in the shipping details when printing labels.

On the listing side, the Irregular Package option may have been inadvertently selected by the seller or, may have carried over from another listing if the seller uses the "sell one like this" option.

If the item does not actually ship in irregular or non-standard packaging, make sure the "irregular package" box is not checked on the listing form.

And when purchasing a label through eBay after the item has sold, if the rate seems higher than it should be, make sure the weight and dimensions entered are accurate and then check if it is set to "ships in standard package" or "ships in irregular package" and use the edit function if you need to make any changes.

For sellers who use the Bulk label purchasing option, there is also the ability to edit and select standard or irregular packaging in that workflow as well - so make sure all of your labels have the correct packaging option set to ensure correct rates are applied.

Making sure that weight, dimensions and standard or irregular packaging settings are correct should ensure that sellers are paying the correct discounted postal rates offered through eBay when they purchase labels with this new support for irregular packaging added specifically to help avoid postage adjustments after shipping.

Are you being charged higher rates than you should be for labels purchased through eBay after this most recent USPS update and if so, was it due to irregular packaging settings or other issues? Let us know in the comments below!
