eBay Sellers Report Being Charged Insertion Fees For Editing Listings Due To Recurring Technical Issue
UPDATE 8-4-25
While there has still not been any official eBay acknowledgment of this issue, volunteer community mentors say they were informed by eBay staff this morning that a ticket has finally been opened.
Re: Insertion Fee for Revising
An sitewide issue was open on late Saturday and under ALERT16099 for insertion fee's being charged for revising the listings, though the seller has free listings left on their account. Please feel free to share this information with other sellers and we will update the Tech Board this morning.
eBay sellers across multiple countries say they're being charged additional insertion fees just for editing a listing, but confusion may be caused by recurring display error technical issue.
Typically, sellers have a set number of "free" listings to use per month, which can vary depending on account level, story subscription and categories, and for every new listing over that free allotment, eBay charges a flat insertion fee per listing - but in most cases, that should only be for creating new listings and additional charges shouldn't apply when editing basic information like description, item specifics, price or quantity in an existing listing.
Over the last few days, sellers in the UK have been reporting eBay is apparently attempting to charge for revisions as well - with additional fees showing on the screen when they attempt to edit a listing.
ebay now charging to revise listings?
I've just relisted a bunch of items. Naturally, ebay have automatically changed my custom shipping to 'simple' (anything but), even though 90% of them are still eligible for custom postage.
So, I go to edit some of them & every single one of them - before I change a thing on the listing - wants to charge me 35p to revise it!
What gives? I had no such problems yesterday.
I can report the same issue. Oddly enough I got charged £0.12 for adding to the title of a listing. But oddly enough it doesn't seem to be happening with all listings. Tested it randomly with a couple of listings and it seems to come up with a fee to edit on some listings and others it doesn't.
If this is a glitch I hope they fix it ASAP as my shop fee has just renewed and the last thing I want is to be charged £0.12 for every single renewal.
Some sellers in the US are running into the same problems today, saying eBay is showing additional insertion fees will be charged when they attempt to revise listings.
Insertion Fee for Revising
Ebay has started charging me insertions fee whenever I revise an existing listing. I usually list items at a slightly higher price and lower it a little each month. I don't understand why this has just started happening now and how to get around it?!?
I chatted with someone at customer service. They said it was a mistake and the fees would be credited. They were never credited. They sent me a message asking me for feedback about the customer service experience. I gave negative feedback and explained the problem. The fees have still not been credited.
I don't understand why this has just started happening now and how to get around it?!?
To add to the confusion, it's possible that these sellers may not actually be being charged any additional fees at all - instead it may simply be a technical issue which causes a "display error" erroneously showing fees will apply when editing listings, but not actually charging the seller those fees once the revisions are completed.
Longtime community member WastingTime101 suggested for sellers who are seeing these apparent additional insertion fees for revisions to double check under the payment tab to confirm if they are actually being charged.
Most of the time this happens it's a display issue where it shows a fee when you go to revise, but that fee is not actually charged to your account. Can you check your Payments page to verify if you were actually charged fees for revising active listings? You can do a search by item number.
Community staff Devon@ebay confirmed there are no current open trouble tickets for this issue and also suggested for sellers to double check the Payments page to verify if there were any actual charges.
Hey @valueaddedresource! I do not see any open tickets for what OP is describing. I also echo what @wastingtime101 said and to double check the Payments page to verify that they are actually being charged.
If you find that you are actually being charged insertion fees in error for editing listings, the best course of action would be to contact support either through the eBay site or their dedicated social media support channels @askeBay on X/Twitter or eBay/eBay For Sellers on Facebook and Instagram.
While it will be a relief for affected sellers if they aren't actually being charged, this display issue is still likely to cause confusion and disruption to workflows since it appears during the revision process and may make sellers hesitant to save their edits for fear of being charged.
It's also disappointing to see that this apparent technical issue continues to crop up as it has been an ongoing problem for several years - for example, the exact same thing happened back in 2021:

And this is just the latest in a long line of longstanding and recurring technical issues that eBay is apparently either unable or unwilling to fix.
Back in 2019, eBay and then CEO Devin Wenig faced activist investor pressure from Elliott Management calling for changes at the company, with constant site glitches and technical misexecution called out explicitly as one of the major problems plaguing the platform.
Six years later, it's shocking just how much of Elliott's "Enhancing eBay" plan still rings true today.

Wenig infamously said at eBay Open 2018 that technical glitches are unacceptable and really pissed him off.
eBay has since removed the video they had posted on YouTube of the eBay Open 2018 Q&A segment, but the interviewer asked:
There've been a lot of site glitches recently on eBay. What are you guys doing to get rid of them?
And Wenig responded:
Here's the simple answer - unacceptable, unacceptable. And we're making a lot of changes. When you make changes there are times that things happen but that's not an excuse and it's not ok with me and this summer in particular there have been a number of issues that directly impacted sellers like people not being able to see their view counts and a few other things and it's just not ok.
I'm extremely proud of a lot of things we've done, I'm not proud of that and in fact I hold my team accountable and it's not important, it's an internal matter but, we made changes to people and teams because shipping product that isn't ready is not ok. It's not ok with me and it's not ok with my team.
So the short answer is it's not like we don't get it. We are making a lot of changes and I want to make those changes, we need to make those changes, but making changes and then having to back up and fix things is not cool and I totally get it. Most of the issues from this summer have now been remedied but I was pissed off.
Mazen Rawashdeh was Chief Infrastructure and Architecture Officer at the time, but somehow managed to escape the wrath of a "pissed off" Wenig and was promoted to Chief Technology Officer, a title he still retains today.
Will he face similar backlash from sellers when eBay Open returns to an in person event for the first time since 2019 later this month in Las Vegas?
