Etsy-owned fashion resale site Depop is launching Outfits, a new shoppable styling and collaging tool as new Product and Technology execs work to improve discovery and scale the platform which has become the shining star in Etsy's dwindling "house of brands."

According to a company press release, Outfits is "a brand-new in-app feature designed to empower users to style, plan, and experiment with their personal looks using real inventory from the marketplace. This launch elevates our People-Powered Experience, encouraging engagement beyond buying and selling and turning Depop into a destination for people to return to daily for inspiration, creativity, and connection."

The fully shoppable styling and collaging tool allows users to pull together looks in a moodboard-style experience, directly from any item listing and purchase their full outfit.

Key features of Outfits include:

  • Users can browse Depop listings, select items, and begin building outfits via a scissor icon
  • The background of each item is automatically removed using integrated technology
  • Outfits are saved in Likes & Saves and can be edited, added to, or shopped later
  • All items featured in Outfits are shoppable, with suggestions for similar items if something sells out
  • Users can easily share static images of their Outfits to platforms like Instagram and Pinterest
  • Users have creative control to style their Outfits their way, with the size and order of the items being fully customisable as well as a range of different background colours and effects.

“From outfit planning and style exploration to creating content for social sharing, Outfits puts the power of self-expression in the hands of our users - no pins, no tabs, just style made simple,” says Sonia Biddle, Depop’s Interim Chief Product Officer & Marketing Leader.

“Outfits is more than just a tool; it’s a foundational step in Depop’s long-term strategy to create a more socially driven experience. It supports our differentiation in the resale market by leaning into what makes our community unique: creative styling, fashion exploration, and culture-driven commerce.”

Biddle previously served in multiple product roles at parent company Etsy from 2010-2022 when she moved over to Depop first as VP Product then taking on the Chief Product Officer role on a interim basis which has now become permanent after previous Depop Chief Technology & Product Officer Rafe Colburn moved back to Etsy in March.

After Colburn's move, Depop decided to split the Product and Technology leadership positions he held into two roles with Keyur Govande, who had been VP Engineering and interim Co-Chief Technology Officer at Etsy moving over to the Depop side as Chief Technology Officer earlier this year.

The exec updates were announced in a post on LinkedIn, making it clear that Biddle and Govande are focusing on improving discovery and scaling the Depop platform as it continues to be an increasingly important piece of Etsy's portfolio.

After selling off Elo7 in 2023 and Reverb earlier this year, Depop is the last name standing in Etsy's "house of brands" strategy.

In fact, while the main Etsy marketplace has continued to struggle, Depop has shown strong growth in recent quarters, reaching the highest US Gross Merchandise Sales reported since the business was acquired by Etsy in 2021.

Depop dropped selling commision fees for the US in July 2024 (though sellers still pay payment processing fees) and instituted a buyer side Marketplace Fee instead after successfully making the same changes in the UK earlier last year.
